Tips for Packing and Shipping a Box with Mixed Items

If you have a lot of items to ship to one place, you want to minimize the number of boxes you send. However, you also want to ensure that everything arrives intact. When you have items of different sizes, shapes, weights, and fragility, it can be tricky to pack all your items so nothing gets damaged in transit. At Peterborough Camera, Copies & More, we offer packing and shipping services, so we have a few tips to help you pack a wide variety of items into a single package.

Whether you use our packing and shipping services or do it yourself, use these tips to pack mixed items in a single box.

Choose the Right Box and Packing Materials

First, you need a good box. Get a sturdy, corrugated cardboard box that’s slightly larger than the combined volume of your items. A double-walled box is ideal for heavier or fragile shipments. Avoid using damaged or previously used boxes—especially for fragile or heavy items—as they are more likely to fall apart in transit.

Next, you need packing materials to keep your items from moving around in the box. You’ll need bubble wrap, packing paper, foam peanuts or air pillows, and packing tape. Don’t be skimpy when it comes to packing materials. Protection is key when shipping mixed items.

Sort, Fill, Balance

How you arrange the items in the box matters because you don’t want them to damage each other. Place the heaviest and most durable items on the bottom of the box. Fragile or lightweight items should go on top. Group similar items together and wrap each one individually. For delicate pieces, use extra bubble wrap or place them inside smaller, cushioned inner boxes. Use packing paper or foam peanuts to fill empty spaces between items to prevent movement during transit. Add cushioning to the bottom, sides, and top of the box to absorb shock.

You also want to ensure the box is evenly weighted. An unbalanced box is more likely to shift, fall, or be dropped. Distribute weight evenly across the base of the box so it is stable and easy to carry.

Seal Securely and Label Appropriately

Finally, it’s time to seal it up. Use high-quality packing tape to seal all seams, especially the bottom. Reinforce corners and edges if necessary. Before sealing completely, you can also perform a “shake test.” Gently shake the box to ensure the contents are evenly distributed. If you hear items shifting, add more padding. A well-packed box shouldn’t rattle.

Don’t forget to add labels! Clearly mark “Fragile” or “This Side Up” if needed. Include a detailed packing slip inside and label the outside with the recipient’s address and return address.
